The paper deals with the problem of minimizing the transverse deflection at the free end of a cantilevered, elastic beam-column of given mass which is acted upon simultaneously by an axial compression, transverse forces and a concentrated bending moment at the free end. Solutions are presented for beam-columns of sandwich and solid construction. It is shown that the free end deflection of the maximum stiffness beam-columns is substantially smaller than that of corresponding prismatic beam-columns. |
