Much previous work on structural optimization has required over-simplification of real design problems in order to fit the mathematical format of available solution techniques. This paper presents a method of optimization which imposes no restrictions on the nature of the variables, objective function or contraints. The method is described and an example of its use in designing cylindrical shells is presented. |
