Structural systems are modelled according to state space concepts of modern control systems theory. Markovian properties are used along with arguments aligning with Bellmans principle of optimality to derive a recurrence relationship for the problem of the probabilistic optimum design of structures. An extension to an extra dimension enables the inclusion of general reliability constraints. Illustrations of the usage of the recurrence relationship are given. System parameters (including the loading) are assumed to be given with known probability laws or alternatively to have known first and second-order moments. System behaviour is assumed predictable in a probabilistic sense. The expected value of the optimality design criterion is used as a measure of system suitability. |
