TRANSCENDING SOCIAL SKILLS ORIENTED INSTRUCTION WITHIN INTEGRATED CLASSROOMS

Title: TRANSCENDING SOCIAL SKILLS ORIENTED INSTRUCTION WITHIN INTEGRATED CLASSROOMS
Author: Iannaccone, Carmen J.
Hwang, Yong G.
Appeared in: Emotional and behavioural difficulties
Paging: Volume 3 (1998) nr. 1 pages 25-29
Year: 1998
Contents: Evidence supporting the need for renewed and reconfigured emphases for social skills and/or competence across the USA and within the curricular and instructional programs of integrated schools and classrooms worldwide is convincing. Teacher perceptions of how best to maintain academic performance standards while addressing social skills/competence as an integral focus in the educational program calls for creative curriculum and teaching strategies. Collaborative and/or instructional approaches hold particular promise as a methodolgy for addressing this within classrooms where students with disabilities are integrated. Clearly articulated dimensions of social skill/competence knowledge and behaviour can be taught contextually with the balanced pairing of collaborative/cooperative learning strategies, in conjunction with academic subject matter, problem solving activities and projects, selected or formulated for groups of students with and without disabilities.
