Contents: Interest in electromechanical actuator systems has grown recently because of the need for very fast acting circuit breakers for power circuits containing semiconductor elements. To determine the optimum values of the system parameters a sufficiently accurate analysis is needed. In this paper a method to analyze the performance of a system consisting of a fixed coil and a movable disk is presented. The disk is thought to consist of separate rings, which allows a network representation of the system. The resulting differential equations have been solved by means of a digital computer. Some calculated characteristics are presented and compared with measurements showing remarkably good agreement. These curves show that action times as short as 1 ms can be realized, but at the cost of a very low efficiency if practical limits to voltage, current, etc., are observed.
