Inhoud: Precise investigations indicate that it is possible to extract upto about 5 % harmonic power in addition to the power rating of a synchronous machine. Thus for high rating machines say of the order of 500 MW to 2000 MW capacity, this power gain would be 25-100 MW, which is quite a substantial gain of power, large alternators require excitation power of about 0.3 to 0.4 % of their ratings. This harmonic power available is therefore quite sufficient for purpose of self-excitation of the alternator. In this paper two alternative methods of extracting the harmonic power from the alternator have been discussed. The first method requires a zig-zag choice and the second employs placing of separate harmonic winding. Different factors affecting the magnitude of third harmonic flux have been considered. The paper also describes the graphical method developed by the author for estimating the third harmonic no-load voltage charateriatic accurately taking into account the effect of saturation. An optimum pole-form for a salient pole synchronous alternator without affecting the normal properties and resulting in somewhat cheaper machine has also been evolved.
