Inhoud: The increasing electrical load in automobiles in the last 90 years has led to the change from 4 V to 12 V in operating voltage. The Lundell machine that has been used for several years is now incapable of handling the ever increasing demand in automobile systems. This inadequacy has prompted an investigation into alternative generating systems such as permanent magnet machines and vector controlled induction machines. These new systems should be equipped with the capability to operate in the speed range of 1:10 and to generate higher voltages. This work investigates the capability of a vector-controlled induction machine to function as a starter motor as well as a generator in automobiles. This machine caters to the demand of electrical systems in automobiles so that the battery connected to a dc link is drained to the minimum extent possible, even at low speeds. Since the same machine acts as the starter motor during starting of the vehicle, and later as a generator, it eliminates an additional point of failure due to mechanical mismatch. A PI controller is used when the machine operates as a motor. Normally, the induction machine acts as an isolated generating system whose output voltage and power vary with speed. Three different control strategies are proposed here when the machine operates in generating mode to improve the voltage regulation and power delivering capabilities. The selection of a particular strategy depends upon the drive requirements and machine limitations. The last of the control strategies seems to be the best, as it will make the voltage and power output constant through the largest possible speed range without exceeding the ratings of the machine. The simulated results are presented for all three control strategies to bring out the relative advantages and disadvantages of each.
