Contents: A challenging Job for the protection of EHV/UHV transmission lines is to have reliable, maintainable and quick acting relaying schemes. This paper presents a novel relaying scheme which possesses these features. The signal for the purpose of relay pick up uses the travelling waves of voltage and current which are produced after the fault in such long transmission lines having distributed parameters. Time domain as well as frequency domain methods are available for this purpose. The paper presents the transient fault analysis of a multinode power system network which employs the nodal formulation for frequency domain analysis. Finally, the paper concludes with the discussion of the results of the proposed digital relaying scheme based upon travelling wave phenomena.
