Inhoud: The D-decomposition method, which is very powerful in the stability study of multiparameter systems, is applied to derive generalised stability charts for the determination of instability regions of variable frequency induction motors. The characteristic equation in the desired form has been derived using equations in Park's Vector. A detailed study of the effects of variations of machine parameters on the stability of the motor has been carried out. From this study it is observed that for an induction motor having low leakage reactance, there are two regions of instability during low frequency operation. It is also observed that even though increases in stator resistance and moment of inertia have stabilizing effect for normal induction machines, low leakage machines become unstable at high values of stator resistance and moment of inertia.
