New trends in drive selection for position control applications suggest utilization of reluctance motors, due to the merits offered by it. One of the salient features that dominates its performance and support its utilization, is its fixed speed of running (synchronous speed), therefore, its suitability for such a type of application is feasible so long as its speed is related to input frequency. However, such a relation is not usually followed at transient or starting up period, where pole slipping phenomenon occurs. The present paper investigate the effects of motor individual parameters on number of pole slipping occuring when starting the motor. Useful conclusions have stemmed, which are considered to be of a good aid to both the designer and the user of these machines.
