Contents: In this paper a new probability density function named Hyper Rayleigh Distribution (HRD) is introduced. Some further possibilities all of which introduce additional parameters in order to allow greater flexibility or to describe the mechanism of distribution more fully are examined. Long term data of wind speed and irradiance for Logan Airport in Boston for every hour of tie day for 30 years were used to examine the HRD. It was found that a three parameter HRD function can be more closely fitted. Kolomogorov-Smirrov (K-S) method was used to examine the goodness of fit of HRD. The results are then compared with the corresponding values obtained when the Weibull distribution is used. On the basis of the energy concept an application is included to find the optimum size of the PV array for a hybrid wind/PV. It was found that the usage of HRD to fit the irradiance random variable is optimal than the usage of Weibull distribution.
