In recent years higher education has been facing a severe crisis as a result of declining enrollment. More attention is being paid to older people, who constitute a major untapped source of potential students. The transition, however, of older people into the role of students of higher education will not be easy. Traditional characteristics of higher education are not conducive to participation by older people and society has fixed conceptualizations of older people as learners. An argument is made that institutions of higher education are beginning to be more responsive to older people, and gerontological theory might prove useful in guiding action. |
