Jaar: 1996-01-01
Inhoud: Given the accumulating evidence that children of parents with psychiatric disorders are themselves at risk of developing problems, recent research has begun to investigate the impact that maternal eating disorders may have upon offspring. The relevant literature is reviewed, and the possible mechanisms whereby parental eating disorders can influence child development are discussed. The clinical implications of the findings are then considered, and an approach to working with families with young children is described. This approach uses careful observation together with sympathetic and sensitive support to help parents recognize the way their own overriding attitudes and concerns about food may interfere with their perceptions of and their ability to meet their children's needs.
