Relapse vulnerabilities: Giving focus to weight control treatment

Title: Relapse vulnerabilities: Giving focus to weight control treatment
Author: Kern, Lee
Appeared in: Eating disorders
Paging: Volume 3 (1995) nr. 4 pages 359-365
Year: 1995
Contents: A growing number of health and mental health professionals are questioning the value of dieting (Brownell & Rodin, 1994), despite the fact that there is substantial evidence that supports the connection between obesity and a variety of life-threatening health problems (VanItallie & Lew, 1992). My experiences as Clinical Director of Structure House, a psychologically oriented, residential weight control treatment center, have taught me that traditional diets fail their users by leading them to believe that there is a magic formula of foods that, when followed, will take the weight off and keep it off. I have come to respect weight control as being a great deal more complicated than that. Successful weight control treatment must respect this complexity while providing focus and structure to treatment.
