Inhoud: There is evidence to suggest that nursery school teachers tend to intervene infrequently in children's play in ways that are concerned with intellectual development. Studies are discussed which suggest, by contrast, that skilful adult interaction may facilitate and enhance the imaginative quality of representational play. Skilful interaction requires that three different kinds of relationships #opincidental, instrumental and intrinsic#cp between play and intellectual development are understood, and these are examined. Finally, two styles of interaction, the redirecting and extending styles, are discussed and it is argued that the extending style which synchronises with children's intentions is the one that is educationally profitable but at the same time values children's play in its own right.
