A general model for the reading process

Titel: A general model for the reading process
Auteur: Edfeldt, anAkew.
Verschenen in: Early child development and care
Paginering: Jaargang 8 (1982) nr. 2 pagina's 121-130
Jaar: 1982
Inhoud: As a summary of thirty years of research in reading the author offers a model intended to be instrumental for the reader's understanding of the reading process. The model serves two different purposes. One of these is to combine and interpret what pieces of explanatory knowledge we actually have concerning reading. The other is to infer what it really means to state that reading is one linguistic ability among others and what consequences this has for all elementary reading instruction. The overall outcome of this analysis is that reading is not a synthetic process but an analytical one. It is also indicated that already in his classical monograph of 1908 Edmund B. Huey came to similar conclusions even though he based them on much weaker material. Nevertheless, even though many years have passed since then nobody seems to have grasped his message properly.
