Kahden vaiheilla is an experimental interactive television programme developed and produced in early 2006 at the Media Lab of the University of Art and Design Helsinki. The 15-minute drama, controlled by a computational engine under the influence of multi-channel input from the viewers, was demonstrated to audiences who were able to change the show in real-time by sending SMS messages, sending emails, or writing 'chat' comments on the program's website. These communication channels have been fully integrated into the visual narrative, selected messages from the audience being 'embedded' into the actual visual scenes that are broadcast, avoiding clumsy text overlays and making the interactivity more believable. This paper examines the project in depth, and places it in the context of other related works. Audience feedback from the 'live' presentation will be discussed, followed by a critical appraisal of the results and a discussion of the future development of the project.
