Is the West's Reliance on Technology the Panacea for Future Conflict or its Achilles' Heel?

Title: Is the West's Reliance on Technology the Panacea for Future Conflict or its Achilles' Heel?

Paging: Volume 1 (2001) nr. 2 pages 38-56
Year: 2001
Contents: The application of technology to warfare is a Western prerequisite to minimise risk to friendly forces and collateral damage to the enemy and, increasingly, as a substitute for manpower. It has a considerable effect on the doctrine of warfare, which now tends to lag behind technology's push. However, the use of technology brings with it significant challenges to current thinking. Furthermore, future enemies are likely to attack asymmetrically - the indirect, manoeuvrist approach - identifying vulnerabilities in the technology's employment. This essay assesses some of the modern uses of technology and questions whether the alleged benefits for the West are not outweighed by the organisational, technical, cultural and psychological risks created.
