This essay examines the war-fighting style of Vice Admiral Horatio, Lord Nelson (1758-1805) demonstrating that he developed an approach - given allowances for differences between land and sea environments - which is very similar to that now called Maneuver Warfare. Lord Nelson makes an ideal focus for a case study of Maneuver Warfare at sea because he raised the art of naval warfare to unsurpassed heights by using virtually all of the concepts now extolled by maneuverists - the application of strength against weakness, reconnaissance pull, directive control, maneuver, tempo, focal points of effort, and the aim of achieving victory by pre-empting the opponent's decisions and shattering his will to fight - to gain the stunning victories that gave his country naval supremacy for a full century. |
