The Widowed Persons Service of Orange County, Florida, Inc. began one-to-one outreach to newly widowed people in the Orlando metropolitan area in November 1981. Early in 1983, the trainers decided that the outreach volunteers needed additional support in their work. A bimonthly meeting was set in addition to the regular report meeting. Volunteers could bring the people with whom they were working, and one of the trainers would be present to facilitate discussion. The afternoon “talk group” was begun using a simple format of having the participants become acquainted, share their concerns, and receive and give understanding and support as they worked through the grief process. In September 1987, a younger widowed talk group was begun. This report explores philosophy, format, and procedures, and differences and similarities between the two groups.
