One hundred eight bereaved spouses between the ages of 50 and 89 completed six interviews/questionnaires over the first two years of bereavement in order to examine the degree of stability in the structural and qualitative aspects of their social support networks. Generally, the networks were quite positive and stable, particularly with respect to the qualitative indicators. The networks became concentrated in persons of the same sex as the respondent, and showed a trend toward an increasing proportion of members who were friends. There also was a slight decrease in the ease and amount of contact with the primary network. Those over the age of 75 were at greatest risk for declines in their support networks. |
