Title: 'Does your mother know you are heterosexual?': discretion management and resistance of the erotic in the genitourinary clinic
Author: Pryce, Anthony
Appeared in: Critical public health
Paging: Volume 10 (2000) nr. 3 pages 295-311
Year: 2000-09-01
Contents: This paper stems from analyses of data collected in the Eros project, a study concerned with the construction and interpenetration of two discursive formations, sexualities and medicine. Each is saturated with power relations, and enmeshed in complex social interactions and forms of knowledge. They are held in uneasy tension when the embodied experience of erotic pleasures becomes subject to the disciplinary gaze and praxis of clinical medicine. Central to the work of the clinic is the surveillance of clients through processes of intimate physical examination and confessional interviews, which demand discretion management by clinical staff. Stemming from Foucault's analyses on the history of sexuality, and also drawing on Douglas's notions of symbolic and instrumental purity and 'dirt', the paper explores how the professional culture deals with sexual saturation and the presence of immanent desire in the clinical environment. It is proposed that it is the potential for erotic 'truths' to subvert the professional order and scientific sex that provides resistance and counter-gaze to clinical surveillance.
