In November 1988 three composers, Svend Aaquist Johansen, Ivar Froundberg and Wayne Siegel, presented a concert with live computer music in Copenhagen entitled Netværk. Each composer defined a compositional process and a computer program for a movement of the work. The computers were programmed so that certain elements of the piece were fixed ahead of time while other elements could have varying degrees of openness. The way in which these elements were combined — in essence the way the composers defined their computer programs — became an integral part of the composition, while the computers enabled them to create a multitude of musical details using simple manual gestures, allowing them to retain some of the spontaneity of improvisation and the control of composition. |
