I want to use the opportunity of what might at first sight be a historical survey to highlight some of the questions raised by the techniques and approaches used by three live electronic music ensembles based in Britain in the period 1968-1985 (ie. before the current generation of digital synthesizers and signal processors became inexpensively available) which might help reinvigorate contemporary developments in this field. For surely the 1990s will see an explosion in developments in live performance techniques using technology, and, more arguably, a rekindling of awareness of some of the only partly-fulfilled ideals of the experimenters of that earlier era. The article will be divided into three main sections: the first, a brief Historical Survey will concentrate on three of the leading groups based in Britain during this period, Gentle Fire, Intermodulation and the West Square Electronic Music Ensemble; in the second, Music/approaches/techniques will be examined and, finally, the Technology will briefly be discussed. This last section will concentrate on those ideas not easily recreatable with more contemporary devices.
