Inhoud: The pianist David Burge is best known for his collaboration with the composer George Crumb, which resulted in the classic cycle Makrokosmos . A pioneer of new music performance in the USA and long-time member of the piano faculty at the Eastman School, Burge's career began in the 1940s. Since then, he has worked with composers including Ernst Krenek, Luciano Berio, and Karlheinz Stockhausen; he also collaborated with singers including Cathy Berberian and Bethany Beardslee. A composer as well as performer, Burge discusses his compositional aesthetic and its relation to his performance experiences. Discussing how new music performance, recording, and reception has changed in the past fifty years, Burge comments on his decision to write Twentieth Century Piano Music , a treatise on the contemporary repertoire.
