The percussionist Steve Schick is renowned for his performances of an unusually broad literature, ranging from music of Xenakis and Ferneyhough to works of Steve Reich and rock-influenced composers championed by Bang on a Can. Currently, he is on faculty of the University of California at San Diego. Schick explores the physical and psychological aspects of his creative process and recounts formative experiences with the music of composers including Karlheinz Stockhausen, Alban Berg, Brian Ferneyhough, and James Dillon. In discussing the evolution of his performance aesthetic, he also discusses the responsibility of a new music performer - to himself, the composer, and the listener. |
