Titel: The modern guitar in Australia
Auteur: Morris, Geoffrey
Verschenen in: Contemporary music review
Paginering: Jaargang 21 (2002) nr. 1 pagina's 13-22
Jaar: 2002-03
Inhoud: The Australian guitarist Geoffrey Morris has premiered over fifty works from composers ranging from Brian Ferneyhough to Steve Reich. Since graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1992, he has played with the ensembles ELISION and Libra and performed as a soloist throughout Australia, Europe, and America. An expert performer of the "New Complexity" repertoire, Morris addresses specific challenges facing the new music player and discusses the development of technique and crucial aspects of learning, practicing, performing, and recording difficult music. He also offers insights on the contemporary guitar repertoire, including works for solo guitar, acoustic guitar and tape, and electric guitar, as well as chamber music by Franco Donatoni, James Dillon, and John Cage, among others. Commenting on new music's reception in his own country, Morris compares the Australian situation with musical life in Europe and America.
