Paginering: Jaargang 12 (1995) nr. 2 pagina's 3-8
Jaar: 1995
Inhoud: The contemporary disassociation of art from society has a particular relevance to the sphere of sacred music, where there is a great danger in the dichotomy between man's cultural and his religious nature, This article deals with some points raised in an address delivered bu Cardinal Ratzinger in 1985. The function of liturgical music in various milieux must be considered; the question fo tradition raised, including the cultural implications of this; and the complicated relationship between text and music. A definition of the purpose of liturgical music can thus begin to be arrived at, and it may be seen more clearly what kinds of music are not appropriate for liturgical use. Two 'signposts' to a contemporary solution are the proof of time, using familiar and tested texts (though one must be careful here to en ure that vernacular translations are adequate); and the tradition of the past, as a standard which prov des orientation.
