This account of my compositional preoccupations as related to the sacred necessarily involves an exposition of my own philosophy, which is based on a deep awareness of the spiritual dichotomy — that of the pagan and the Christian — in western culture. My own background, Lutheran Finland, has in fact given me an 'ecumenical' appreciation of the mysterious exoticism of both Roman Catholicism and Orthodoxy, a fact reflected in a number of my compositions. My philosophy of the sacred is nevertheless not an expression of any particular religion; rather it is what Schleiermacher calls 'a taste for the infinite'. |
