The western concept of the creative genius is in direct opposition to the precepts upon which the creation of art within a sacred tradition is based. In Orthodox Christianity, as in other traditions, the sacred artist must draw from and learn within his tradition before true sacred art is possible. Recent tendencies in the west have been contrary to this ideal, concerned with egoistic 'innovation' and lacking the theocentric orientation and transparency necessary to become a channel for the divine. |
