This article surveys three important younger (born c. 1950) American composers. The music of each is very different, aside from a few general common concerns. The work of each is commonly labelled “tonal,” “microtonal,” and “post-modern” respectively. These labels are not very informative, and say nothing about the skill of each composer in creating gestures and achieving musical continuity. The paper examines gesture and continuity in three representative works: Tsontakis's String Quartet No. 3, “Coraggio”; Rosenblum's Circadian Rhythms; and Diesendruck's Coming to Terms in the Tower of Babel, and concludes that they are, in fact, masterpieces which transcend the limiting labels applied to them.
