Contents: This article examines the fall and rise of the national lottery in Britain. It focuses on the process of abolition in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It explores the fate of large-scale lotteries in the prolonged period of prohibition, the reasons for the revival of the present lottery scheme, and the resistance to it from certain quarters, most notably the Football Pools. Finally, it explores the recent debates over the anticipated benefits, and potential problems, associated with the proposed National Lottery Raising Money for Good Causes.
