The Public Relations of Experimental Animal Psychology in Britain in the 1970s

Title: The Public Relations of Experimental Animal Psychology in Britain in the 1970s
Author: Wilson, David A. H.
Appeared in: Contemporary British history
Paging: Volume 18 (2004) nr. 2 pages 27-46
Year: 2004
Contents: This article examines an interaction of public and philosophical opinion with that of scientific psychologists, and the extent of the historical effect of this interaction on the development of a new discipline. It was not until the 1970s that animal psychology became in the United Kingdom a research area drawing levels of criticism from campaigning groups and moral philosophers, as well as from some psychologists, equal to those levelled at other biological sciences involving animal research. Indeed, objections to animal experimentation have focused since the mid 1970s especially on psychological work. The concept of ethical cost in British animal psychology had not earlier taken shape because there had been no occasion for it due to limited work. Public opinion has more recently expressed concern about many non-medical research programmes involving animals, and invasive psychological investigations have come to be placed by it in the same category of allegedly dubious and undesirable research as cosmetics testing. But how much thought, if any, had been given to such ethical matters in animal psychology since the turn of the century? Have pressure groups had any influence on the historical development of animal psychology in Britain? To what extent has animal psychology supplied a historical focus for public hostility to science?
