This bibliographical article is a survey of the existing literature on the Liberal party's attitudes to international affairs from 1919 until its merger with the Social Democratic party in 1988. In a preliminary section on background material, it covers general works, and those on figures such as Cobden and Gladstone, along with studies of the Boer War and the Great War. In the 1919-39 section, close attention is given to writings on Liberal leaders, but valuable sources on lesser-known Liberal thinkers are also highlighted. The section on the years after 1945 covers in detail the party's attitudes to Europe, and also lists some useful works of biography and autobiography. The conclusion considers some of the main themes which emerge from the literature, and highlights some of the gaps which need to be filled. |
