For most studies of Britain's elites 1914 marks a fundamental break This article critically assesses this view. Instead of the decline that is traditionally argued, it contends that the 1920s saw the consolidation of a reconfigured elite unified politically within an electorally dominant Conservative party. The First World War and its aftermath, far from fatally weakening the elites, actually encouraged this process. The result was the success and resilience of the British 'Establishment' and state in weathering the storms of the inter-war years, in contrast to the states of continental Europe where, in many cases, the old elite structures had been extensively undermined during the First World War. |
