  The social market foundation

Titel: The social market foundation
Auteur: Baston, Lewis
Verschenen in: Contemporary British history
Paginering: Jaargang 10 (1996) nr. 1 pagina's 62-72
Jaar: 1996
Inhoud: The Social Market Foundation began its life as an attempt to define the David Owen Social Democratic Party. It defines its ideology as favouring the primacy of the market but understanding the social underpinnings of the market, in distinction to the 'free' market. It was relaunched in 1992 with the aid of large donations; it has grown in size and influence since. It targets policy formers and media commentators. Like many think tanks, the SMF is managed collectively and informally. It has an ambivalent relationship with the political parties. While its leading figures have close connections with the Conservatives, and its work has tended to be directed toward the right, it has tried to cultivate some influence with 'New Labour'. The true relationship of the SMF to the parties can only be tested by the election of a Labour government.
