Reduction of higher order elliptic equations to first order systems appears to destroy the ellipticity of the equation. Lllipticity can sometimes be restored by adding consistent equations; however, in this case an overdetermined elliptic system arises. In the present work it is shown how such overdetermined systems in the plane may lead to a natural function theory. This occurs when the coefficient matrix of the system, in normal form, has a group inverse. |
