We study the polar singularities of solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations of the form (a(|Du|)Du)= 0 in the plane. We assume a degenerate (and singular) ellipticity condition which, essentially, says that the equation can be formally transformed into a uniformly elliptic one, when we perform the divergence. The p-laplacian is included as a special case. We represent the complex gradient ∂zu around a non-removable polar singularity z0 in terms of a series expansion of a quasiconformal mapping H, where [image omitted] m being the index of Du in z0:. The analysis of the asymptotic behavior of H gives power estimates from above and below for |Du depending on the ellipticity constants and on the index m. Moreover, we also obtain an upper bound for m depending on the rate of growth of |Du| at z0. The theory of quasiconformal mappings and the method of the hodograph transformation are used. |
