Recently, widespread and high-level attention both in the United States and in Europe has been focused on the prospects for a non-nuclear defense of NATO. Central to such a defense is a generation of advanced, high-technology weapons systems which are to be employed against a range of fixed and mobile targets behind the Warsaw Pact's front lines. However, the promises made regarding these new weapons and the overall concept of deep strike against rear area targets may exceed “real world” performance. Moreover, even if these weapons worked perfectly, they could not replace nuclear weapons as the foundation of NATO's deterrent strategy. |
