While neither the FLN in Algeria nor the Mau Mau in Kenya was successful militarily (despite the impression to the contrary regarding the FLN), they were not political failures (which is sometimes forgotten with respect to the Mau Mau, largely because of its conspicuous military defeat). They contributed to the decisions by France and Britain to concede paramountcy to the African majority in their colonies. By comparing the FLN and Mau Mau on four levels— origins, resources and logistics, leadership, and civilian support—we find that although differences exist between them, they are differences of degree rather than kind. |
