For a free people to preserve their liberty, they must preserve their ability to make decisions for themselves, through the institutions they have created. Strategic theory suggests that it will be easy for aggressors to undermine a country's capacity for self-government if they gain even small advantages. For this reason, people are right to guard their national independence jealousy. One must be suspicious of lines of reasoning that lead one to give up this independence. This article establishes these principles using works of political and strategic theory. The author goes on to illustrate his points with historical examples. Finally, the article examines certain arguments concerning the ongoing war on terrorism. Although this article does not take specific positions on specific policies, it suggests that one should be war of certain lines of thinking. |
