A significant gap has developed between American and Japanese perceptions of the security situation in the Far East. Whereas Americans think the area is becoming increasingly stable, Japanese feel the situation is not improving and may even be deteriorating. The difference of perceptions, combined with the imbalance of mutual dependency between Japan and the United States, signifies trouble ahead for U.S.-Japanese relations. To prevent this from occurring, Japan should undertake measures to promote mutual understanding and provide for its long-term security, recognizing the limits of the U.S. commitment. The United States, for its part, should show greater interest in Japan and refrain from actions that make the Japanese suspicious of American intentions toward their country. |
