This article examines the future missions and force structure of the U.S. Coast Guard. The relationship of the Coast Guard with the U.S. Navy is a matter that is both vital and politically and professionally sensitive. The analysis considers the implications of current trends in the Navy (e.g., a smaller, more capable, more expensive, surface fleet), in the uses of the sea (more marine traffic, more pressure on resources, more challenges to U.S. authority), and in the equipment of the Coast Guard (seriously aging). The article develops sources of guidance for shaping the future of the U.S. Coast Guard well into the next century. |
