The recent U.S.-Russian relationship has been a success story in comparison with the tension of the cold war period, despite the following problems. The most evident problem that U.S.-Russian relations now face is a stalemate in the arms control dialogue. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) expansion issue is a good example of how purely symbolic matter can spoil the relationship. Russia's tougher line in determining rights and responsibilities in relation to the other former Soviet republics poses the most serious problem for the United States. |
