Ballistic missile proliferation has been an issue in the Middle East for decades. Because ballistic missiles offer a variety of uses for a relatively low cost, they will maintain a major role in regional security. This will continue to have strategic consequences for the region. Yet, despite the utility of ballistic missiles, it is unlikely that their technology will spread significantly in the Middle East in the 1990s. This is the result of both the economic hardships facing many states in the region and supply-side controls limiting the transfer of ballistic missile technology. |
