Teng Hsiaoping's economic reforms have moved steadily forward in spite of the post-Tienanmen Square repression. Economic modernization has increased the pressure for political liberalization. However, China does not want to repeat the mistakes of the former Soviet Union. The Chinese reject raising of the human rights issue by the United States as an intrusion into domestic affairs. In terms of relations with its neighbors China historically has been very defensive in the north and rather aggressive in the south, where it continues to lay claim to territories like Hong Kong and the Paracel Islands. |
