Winston Churchill and Mikhail Gorbachev spoke at Fulton, Missouri, 46 years apart on issues fundamental to American foreign policy and twentieth century politics. The ideas expressed by these two foreign political leaders, however, could not have been more opposed to each other. The intellectual and historical claims of both speeches are contrasted here in order to highlight critical differences and to demonstrate that Churchill, the preeminent statesman, had, and still has, a great deal to say to American foreign policymakers. |
