Inhoud: Political developments in the Pacific region toward the end of the 1970s appeared to create the conditions for something like a Pacific concert. The idea of a Pacific Community has been explored unofficially, but the Prime Ministers of Japan and Australia have taken an active interest. Other governments, including those of the United States, China, South Korea, and ASEAN, have also indicated an interest. A major element of this community would be Australia's relationship with Japan and the United States. Australia is likely to be of increasing importance to the United States as the 1980s progress. Although Australia downplayed the American security connection following the end of the Vietnam War, believing that she should not rely for her defense on anyone else, recent international developments have made cooperation with allies more desirable. For Australian governments, the emphasis on trade and economic connections, the interest in a Pacific Community, the links with Japan and the United States, and the wish for self-reliance in defense can be made not merely compatible but mutually supporting.
