Inhoud: This study sought to identify, analyze, describe, and compare the performance behaviors of Mexican American and Anglo American deans and chairpersons in Texas public community/junior colleges as they resolved a set of critical incident situations. The methodology was derived from two well-known techniques: (1) the Critical Incident Technique (CIT), and (2) the Behavioral Event Interviewing Technique (BEIT). The application of this methodology consisted of writing and using a set of validated critical incident scenarios to collect data. The data were collected by interviewing respondents about how they would resolve the critical situations described in the scenarios. The respondents were two groups of Mexican Americans—seven deans and seven chairpersons—and two similar comparison groups of Anglo Americans. These groups were selected from two colleges having different proportions of Spanish-sumamed students. Interview protocols were keyed to a set of generic managerial competencies used by respondents according to ethnicity, environment, and position role. The results of this study indicate that ethnicity, environment, and role position have only a minimal relationship to the reported array of competencies. Notwithstanding, these results do support a theory that Mexican American administrators exhibit the same array of managerial competencies as their Anglo American counterparts in Texas public community/junior colleges at the dean and chairperson level.
