Titel: THE TEACHING PRACTICES OF TWO-YEAR COLLEGE SCIENCE AND HUMANITIES INSTRUCTORS
Auteur: Bowles, Callie R.
Verschenen in: Community college journal of research and practice
Paginering: Jaargang 6 (1982) nr. 2 pagina's 129-144
Jaar: 1982-10
Inhoud: Data from nationwide surveys sponsored by the Center for the Study of Community Colleges formed the basis for this study of teaching practices. Lecture is the most popular method of teaching among two-year college instructors, with class discussion ranking second. Cross tabulations of percentage of class time spent lecturing with the full- or part-time status of respondents revealed a dependent relationship, t tests indicated that (1) significantly more full-time than part-time humanists with master's degrees lecture more extensively (p<.005); (2) part-time science faculty with 3-4 and 5-10 years of experience lecture more than their full-time counterparts (p < .01), and (3) full-time humanists with 11-20 years experience lecture more extensively than their part-time counterparts (p = .003). Other t tests indicated that (1) part-time scientists with 1-2 years of experience use tests more often than full-time counterparts, (2) more part-time than full-time humanists with 5-10 years of experience use tests more frequently, and (3) part-time humanists with doctorates use tests more than their full-time counterparts. Likewise important were findings about the use of viewing and listening media, which humanists use more frequently than scientists.
